In the last few weeks Crewe Community Safety Team has been involved in a wide range of activities such as carrying out talks to Sure Start, Methodist Church members, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage II classes, Driver Engagement Days, and also targeting specialist groups and the general public to carry out Home Safety Assessments.

In addition Cheshire East has successfully organised and completed an "Impact Day" in Rainow near Macclesfield carrying out a close to 150 Home Safety Assessments and engaging with members of the Public over a wide range of safety matters. Ramblers, Pre-school, Beavers, Church groups and even drivers visited the Outreach vehicle and all went away with something and with a very positive outlook of the Service.


Blue Watch - Help the Hero's Event

On Sunday the 20th of June an appliance and crew from Blue Watch attended a Help the Hero's fund raising event at Sandbach Boys School on Crewe Road in Sandbach.

The fun day which was raising money for our Armed Forces was attended by all the emergency services and the local Army Cadets, also on display were military vehicles.

The fire fighters were able to offer fire safety advice and make those present aware of the Free Home Fire Safety Assessment service and also to show the kids and parents around the appliance to see the equipment carried.

The attending crew were; CM Barlow, FF Gresty, FF Bowen, FF Hewitt and FF Bostock


Blue Watch - Gresty Community Safety Day

On Saturday the 19th of June appliances and crews from Blue Watch attended the Gresty Community Safety Day which was held on Brookhouse Drive in Crewe.

The event was the first of what is hoped to be an annual event which brings together local agencies and offers advice to the local residents of the community, also present were Cheshire Police and Wulvern Housing.

The fire fighters where on hand to show kids and parents around the appliances and to assist members of our Community Safety Team in the handing out of Fire Safety and Road Safety leaflets. During the day crews were making the residents aware of the Free Home Fire Safety Assessment service and offering advice on how to stay safe within their home.

The attending crew were; CM Swan, FF Bostock, FF Garrett and FF Jeffery.


Blue Watch - St. Mary's Parish Church Summer Fete

An appliance and crew from Blue Watch attended St. Mary's Parish Church on Church Lane Willaston on Saturday the 19th of June for their annual Summer Fete. This years theme was 100 years of guiding and the guides took the challenge by dressing up their stall for the competition.

The event started with a Chinese Dragon leading a parade around the streets of Willaston and back to St. Mary's Church. Where there were numerous stalls set up and the local Beavers, Cubs and Scout units were in attendance for the event.

Also attending were local dignitaries the Mayor of Crewe and Nantwich Councillor Gordon Baxendale and Councillor Margaret Simon of the Fire Authority. The main highlight of the event was the crowning of the new Rose Queen Rebekah Turnbull who was crowned by the Rector Mike Turnbull.

The crew were on hand to show the kids and parents around the appliance and handout Safety leaflets and also making those attending aware of our free Home Fire Safety Assessment service and due to the nice weather there was an excellent turnout of around 200 people of all ages.

Blue Watch - Drive Survive EngagementVehicle and casualty ready for arrival of fire fighters

On Friday the 11th of June fire fighters from Blue Watch Crewe assisted Watch Manger Peter Shields of the Road Safety Unit in delivering a Drive Survive Engagement to approximately 60 - 70 students at Reaseheath College in Nantwich.

A scrap vehicle and a volunteer student were used to represent a typical Road Traffic Collision and the crew were on hand to show the Fire fighters getting to work on the vehiclestudents how Cheshire Fire and rescue Service deal with such an incident.

As the crew proceed to rescue the casualty Watch Manager Peter Shields completed a running commentary of what the crew were doing, and more importantly why things were done in a certain way.

Following the removal of the casualty and the completion of the Driver's door removed and casualty carer in the vehicledemonstration the students were given the opportunity to talk to the crew and look at the equipment used during the cutting up of the vehicle.

Peter Shields of the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Road Safety Unit commented that " Drive Survive plays a significant part in reducing deaths and serious injuries involving young people on our roads and is a short, intensive event where young road users are Fire fighters make cuts to vehicle to remove roofexposed ro and discuss the risks associated with being a driver, rider, passenger or pedestrian.

Drive Survive intends to play a significant part in reducing the amount of death and injury on our roads and promote safer, more responsible attitudes towards road use by young people. The course is presented by operational members of Cheshire's emergency services.

Blue Watch - Assist in Opening Ceremony

On Friday the 4th June Blue Watch fire fighters attended Service Headquarters in Winsford to assist in the opening of a new Incident Command Training Suite.Group Manager Peter Walsh talking to the Duke of Westminster

The hi-tech suite incorporates 3D simulation and is capable of recreating any type of fire or major incident with multi-display screens simulating a 360 degree view of an incident. These simulations are used to assess Service Managers, and those who wish to aspire for promotion.

During the opening of the facility by the Duke of Westminster, the crew used the suite to show how it will be used in realistic training. The first incident was a routine Road Traffic Collision and Crew Manager Nigel Swan carried out his normal duties on the fire ground by sending the appropriate orders to the crews attending and messages to FireThe Duke of Westminster being shown a simulated fire ground map Control via radio.

Following this short demo, a second larger incident was run showing a fire in a chemical plant where more resources and personnel are required and a greater degree of control. This enabled the Incident Commander to divide up the fire ground and utilise the other rooms of the suite as sectors, each having a Sector Commander who would report back to the Incident Commander of the operational tactics within their sector.

The rest of the attending crew were; FF Edwards, FF Jeffery and FF Garrett.

 


The fire being startedWhite Watch - London's Burning Call

On Wednesday the 14th of April members of White Watch were called to assist Year Two pupils at Shavington Primary School in their project. The theme was The Great Fire of London and all the class had built model houses to create a street representing Pudding Lane. 

The crew assisted them by safely starting a fire at one end and watched it spread along the street demonstrating the dangers of fire Fire fighter standing by with hose reelspread. Following this event it was an ideal opportunity for the crew to deliver a safety talk to the pupils on Fire Safety within the home.

The session was very well received and one that the children will remember for some years to come.

 

 


 

Red Watch - Driver Engagement DayCrew Manager Nigel  Pordes taking to memeber of the public outside the Out Reach vehicle

On Tuesday the 13th of April an operational crew from Red Watch assisted in supporting a Driver Engagement Day, which was situated on the King Geroge V car park. The crew working along side members of the Road Safety Team engaged with drivers who had been flouting the laws with regards to speeding, not wearing seatbelts and using mobile phones whilst driving.

All of the people identified were shown photographs of Road Traffic Crew Manager Nigel Pordes speaking to memebers of the publicCollisions in Cheshire before being invited to watch a short video displaying the eventualities of poor driving.

The information was received by approximately 40 drivers, who all gave positive remarks afterwards and admitted that it would change their driving habits in future. The day was a total success and other offers from businesses to use their sites were forthcoming also.

Red Watch are looking forward to assisting in similar days in the very near future with the hope of making the roads of Cheshire a safer place to drive.


School Children visit Blue Watch

On Monday the 16th November 30 pupils from Brierley Primary School attended Crewe Community Fire Station to see how fire fighters from Blue Watch work.

Firstly, fire fighter Andy Anderson took the group and utilising the videos from the Kidzone on the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Website talked about What is Fire, Causes of Fire and Preventing Fire thus raising awareness about Fire Safety within the home.

This was followed by a test turn-out for the group to show how fire calls are received and what information we are supplied through the turn-out slip. Finally the rest of Blue Watch took the group around the appliances and answered questions about the equipment.


The 1st Wheelock Guides Community Fire Station Visit

On Saturday the 7th November the 1st Wheelock Guides attended Crewe Community Fire Station and members of Blue Watch were on hand to assist them earning there Fire Safety Badge.

Firstly, fire fighter Janssen Bostock introduced the group on how Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service works. This was followed by how fire's can start (triangle of combustion) and spread, and how it is extinguished. Also knowing what precautions are needed to be taken in the home to prevent fires and emphasising the importance of having a working smoke alarm in the home.

This moved onto knowing how to raise the alarm or in the event of a smoke alarm activating in the home what they should do. He then moved onto the correct way's of dealing with the following fires; a fat or chip pan fire, a person's clothes on fire (Stop, Drop and Roll), grass or bushes on fire and an electrical fire. Also for their badge they covered the different types of fire extinguishers available and what type of fire they would be used on.

Finally, assisted by fire fighters Mark Latham and Ryan Younger the group were able to look around the appliances and ask questions about the equipment carried.


Methodist Church - Bradfield Road

On the 6th of October Blue Watch were invited to attend a pensioner group meeting. The purpose of the visit was to spend sometime with the group and talk about Home Fire Safety.

The crew delivered a talk to approximately 20 elderly people (over 65) in Fire Prevention and thus raising awareness with a vulnerable group within our community. The talk was ended by handing out leaflets to re-enforce out safety message.

Also attending with the crew were two new members of Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Control Staff. They were shadowing the crew for the day to see how operational personnel work and deliver the Fire Safety message through direct engagement to members of the public.

On Saturday the 5th September members of Blue Watch attended the Sherborne Road Fun Day. The event which is in its second year is organised by Wulvern.

The purpose of the event is to bring together different agencies and to give support to residents of the local community. During the visit the crew took time to show the parents and children around the appliance and talk about Home Fire Safety and Red Routes.

Members of Blue Watch attended the Ludford Centre on the 20th of August. This was to support the South Cheshire CLASP which is a support group for single parent families.

The topic of the visit was "Healthy Eating and Safe Play". During the visit the crew took time to show the parents and children around the appliance and used this opportunity to raise awareness on Fire Safety and Red Routes.

The crew also talked to the children about the importance of being seen, wearing of a cycle helmet and the Green Cross Code.


CREWE HERITAGE CENTRE

Members of Blue Watch attended a charity event at the Crewe Heritage Centre. The day was being hosted by the 'Railway Children Charity' which raises money for the orphaned children who live their lives on the railways of India.

During the visit the crew took time to show visitors around the appliances and used this opportunity to raise awareness on Fire Safety in the Home and Red Routes.


Crewe Fire Station Sports DayCrewe fire station sports day

Crewe Firefighters held their annual Community Sports Day at the Cumberland Sports Ground on Saturday 13 June.

In the warm sunshine the youngsters competed in distance races, high jump, long jump, tug-of-war and six-a-side football.

The event was hosted by Ray Stafford and local MP Edward Timpson and his family paid a visit to the event and joined in the fun.

Cheshire East Mayor and member of Cheshire Fire Authority Cllr Margaret Simon presented the event winners with medals, certificates and trophies.

Crewe's Green Watch at the Fire Engine Pull contest atFirefighters flex their muscles for a good cause

Former seamen of the Falklands War Ship 'HMS Ambuscade' recently held their annual reunion in Crewe. Among the fundraising events was a fire engine pull with five teams battling it out to see who could pull a vintage fire appliance in the fastest time over a distance of 300 metres.

The event was held in the car park at Crewe Alexandra FC and members of Green Watch were up for the challenge. Flexing their muscles and using their stamina they pulled the appliance with much enthusiasm, coming second place in the contest, narrowly losing out to a team from a local gym.

The vintage fire appliance, a major attraction at the event, is the property of the Service's Historical Society and special thanks was given to Advocate and Volunteer Barrie Green who drove the appliance to the event.

Funds from the event were raised for Crewe's Seahorse Swimming Club, which is for people with disabilities. Their secretary Gareth Roberts thanked the participants at the event and stated that the money raised would assist the swimmers attending galas throughout the UK
