How many fire stations are there in Cheshire?

How many staff do you employ?

About 1000 in total. 752 Uniformed and 255 Support Staff.

How is Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service funded?

What is the maximum age you can apply to become a Firefighter?

No maximum age.

 

What is the minimum age that you can become a Firefighter?

17 ½


How do you select candidates?

Can I choose which station to work at?

Unfortunately no, whilst we will endeavour to place all new employees at a station that does not cause any inconvenience in relation to travel arrangements, etc. we must also take into account where the service has vacancies.

 

Can I become a Wholetime Firefighter if I wear contact lenses or have had corrective eye surgery?

Yes, part of the Recruitment process will include all applicants having to provide an opticians report. The eyesight standards as provided to the optician can be found on the eyesight requirements page on our website.

 

What are the hearing standards for Firefighters?

Hearing standards have to be good. Hearing will be tested at the medical.

 

How long is the Wholetime Firefighter training course?

Initial training 7 weeks at HQ in Winsford.

How fit do I need to be?

 

You need a good level of fitness over all – in particular aerobic fitness.  You can refer to the website for a training programme that will help you to achieve the level of fitness you require.  You do need good upper body strength and you will need to be able to lift equipment that can weigh between 15kg and 25kg.

 

 

Are there any height and weights restrictions

 

No but you need to be physically fit and will be tested at both the physical test stage and also at the medical. Please refer to the CFRS website for further information.

 

 

Do I have to be a qualified first aider?

 

No – any training you need to carry out the role will be provided.

 

 

What opportunities for career progression exist within CFRS?

 

There is information on our website that shows the opportunities that there are for firefighters to progress from an operational perspective.  There are also other staff and specialist opportunities within the fire service e.g. community safety, children and young people, corporate communications, training & development etc

 

 

Will I have to pay for my own uniform?

 

No – full uniform and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided on your first day.

How do I apply?

What is the selection process and how long will it take?

 

The selection process consists of an online application form, written ability tests, practical tests, face-to-face interview, medical, references and criminal record checks. For further information please refer to the CFRS website.

 

 

Can I apply if I’ve applied to CFRS before?

 

Yes as long as it is more then 3 months ago.

 

 

Can I apply if I have already made an application to a different Fire Service?

 

If you submit an application to CFRS and have already completed some of the test elements of the process with another fire service, these will not be valid or applicable with any application to our fire service.  You should decide which fire and rescue service that you want to apply for and make your application to that specific fire and rescue service only.

 

 

What qualifications/experience do I need to have to be considered?

 

You are not required to have any qualifications or prior experience.

 

 

Will I receive feedback on my performance in the selection process?

 

Due to the large volumes of applicants we are unable to offer feedback in the initial stages of the process.

 

 

What should I wear to assessment events?

 

This will depend on the type of assessment you are attending for. Specific details will be given each time you are invited in for a particular assessment event.

 

 

Will expenses be covered when I attend selection events?

 

No

 

 

Who do I get a reference from?

 

References will be requested from you current and previous employer.  If you have been at college then you will be asked to provide a reference from college and a personal reference

 

 

On what grounds do you would you regret people based on the information provided in the: medical check; CRB check; or References obtained?

 

Medical – if there is a risk to you/organisation due a specific health issue that would prevent you from carrying out the duties required by a firefighter. 

CRB – unspent convictions/offences pending sentencing.  We will look at unspent convictions on a case-by-case basis to assess the severity of the conviction. 

References – an issue that would be deemed as unsatisfactory.

 

 

How long do written and practical tests last for?

 

The shelf life of the NFS written tests is 12 months and three months for the physical tests.

 

     

Diversity

 

 

Will you accept applications from people that do not currently have a work permit?

 

No – unfortunately we are not able to apply for work permits on behalf of individuals.

 

 

Will you accept applications from people with disabilities?

 

We will consider each individual on a case-by-case basis. However please note that you need to be physically fit and able to work at heights, work in enclosed/confined spaces, work outdoors, carry and work with heavy equipment from 15kg up to and in excess of 25kg.
