Firefighters are currently dealing with a large fire in a building on Eleanor Street in Widnes.

The area has been cordoned off and the nearby premises have been evacuated. There are currently eight appliances at the scene battling the fire.

People are advised to keep clear of the incident while it is ongoing.

Further updates will be issued as the incident progresses.

There are now eight fire engines at the scene, including one from Merseyside. Firefighting activities have been suspended while the utility company isolates the power to the building.

Residents are being asked to keep their windows and doors closed as once firefighting operations continue there is expected to be a lot of smoke in the vicinity.

Firefighters are currently waiting for the power supply to be turned off to the building. This will enable them to tackle the fire safely. It is likely that they will have to remain at the scene for some time yet.

We apologise for any disruption this causes. Please be reassured that we are doing all we can to deal with this incident.

People who live nearby are advised to keep their windows and doors shut. Everyone else is advised to avoid the area as there are several roads closed.

Firefighters have now left the scene of the fire. Hose reel jets had been used to put the fire out. A full fire investigation will now begin to find the cause of the blaze.
