Thatched roof fire in Arley, Northwich

Eight fire engines from Warrington, Stockton Heath, Runcorn, Knutsford, Northwich, Middlewich and Winsford


Forty firefighters have been called to deal with a fire involving a large thatched property in Budworth Road, Arley near Northwich.

The Service received the call at 19:41 hours and shortly after arrival the number of fire engines was increased initially to five and then to eight.

Crews using breathing apparatus are currently battling the blaze measuring in the two storey property measuring approximately 15 by 20 metres. Firefighters were then withdrawn because of concerns about part of the roof of the property and began tackling the blaze externally using ladders and hose reels The gas and electricity to the cottage has been isolated.

Crews have been able to contain the fire and are working to save one wing of the property. Firefighters have also been working to help salvage property from the groundfloor of the property.

Water supplies have been boosted by drawing water from a nearby pond.

Crews are expected to remain at the scene overnight.

Update at 8:15am 11/04/14

One fire engine now remains at the scene damping down and a thermal imaging camera is being used to check for hotspots. The road has now re-opened.

Update at 13:00

All firefighters have now left the scene after making a final inspection of the roof using a thermal imaging camera. An investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.
