We consider the event as being timely, in light of the recession, income generated from tourism and those visiting heritage cities and key buildings become vital for ensuring their future preservation.
The loss of an iconic or key heritage building in an area can have a devastating effect, as seen by the Cutty Sark fire in 2007. Not only was there damage to a major part of Britain's nautical heritage, but the fire also affected the local economy having a detrimental impact on the numbers of visitors travelling to the area in the immediate aftermath.
Fire Authorities are in a unique position to establish frameworks to preserve and protect heritage buildings, towns and communities for the enjoyment of future generations. This event will address a wide range of important issues, which are relevant now more than ever as a result of the likelihood of reduced grants for future preservation and a new regulatory regime for fire and other local authorities.
The conference involved key players from across the cultural and heritage sectors, as well as representatives from the world of fire engineering, architecture, tourism and planning. The conference also focused on the underlying themes of fires in heritage buildings during the course of the day - Historic & Economic Impact; Fire Protection; Insurance; Operational Approach and Contingency/Salvage Planning.
