The first cadet unit started in Cheshire was in 1992 with the first area office opening at Poynton Fire Station.
A cadet unit consists of up to 20 cadets and 4 leaders both fire service personnel and volunteers from the community. All time and effort is given on a voluntary basis.
A typical Cadet unit consists of 50:50 girls and boys. It costs approximately £200 for an initial uniform for each Cadet.
The scheme provides young people aged 13 to 18 with an insight into working within a uniformed service, encouraging the young people to develop both personally and socially while promoting self discipline, team work and citizenship.
The scheme promotes physical, mental and emotional wellbeing by taking part in structured activities one night a week at a Fire Station local to the young person
The Cadets make a positive contribution to the community through activities such as fitting smoke alarms for members of the public and by supporting local initiatives.
Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service Cadets have now built three schools in Ghana. Follow the link below for a short film to showcase the third school being built in Adaklu-Helekpe.

Cadets are able to take part in additional activities at weekends and during the school holidays which included residentials, local camps as well as the national camp held every 2 years. Cheshire Cadets have also fostered links with communities in Northern Ireland, Germany and Ghana.
In the summer of 2005 a team of our senior cadets built a school in for a community in Akrofu in the Ho Province of Ghana and we have been asked to send another group out in 2007. the cost of the construction of both buildings is paid for by donations and by cadets fund raising.
Qualifications can also be gained by the Cadets such as a BTEC in technical Services all elements of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and first aid.
