Under the Equality Act 2010, public authorities like Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service are subject to the general public sector equality duty. This means we have an obligation to:
Eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by or under the Act.
Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a relevant protected characteristic and people who do not share it.
Foster good relations between people who share a relevant protected characteristic and those who do not share it.
The Service therefore needs to understand the impact of its policies and practices on people with protected characteristics. To fulfil this, the Service looks to monitor equality information and to set equality objectives.

Equality Monitoring Information and Equality Objectives
Collecting and analysing Equality Monitoring Information is an important way of developing our understanding about our employees and our communities.
The Service's Equality Monitoring Policy fully explains why, how and what the collected information is used for. Please see our Equality Monitoring Policy (new window PDF 108 kb) and Equality Monitoring (new window, PDF 74KB) for further information.
The Service produces annual equality monitoring reports that allow us to identify who is accessing our services and employment opportunities. Please see our most current report: Equality Monitoring Report 2018-19 (new window, PDF 2570KB)
The Service must also publish a set of measurable Equality Objectives every four years. These are currently set out in the Equalities and Inclusion Action Plan 2014 - 2016 (new window, PDF 210KB). These objectives are covered by a general strategy: Corporate Equalities and Inclusion Strategy 2014 - 2016 (new window, PDF 674KB).
Have you ever wondered why we ask equality monitoring questions? Don’t worry, we do ask these questions for a good reason! This video explains these reasons and provides an insight into how carrying out equality monitoring helps to improve the services we deliver.
If you need any more information or want to talk about something that isn’t covered in this video then please contact our Equality and Inclusion Officer on 01606 868414 or on firstname.lastname@example.org
