RESPECT course for 12 to 16 year olds

The scheme (Providing Individuals with Lifelong Learning, Achievements, Resilience and Self Worth) is built on our  20-plus years of working with young people in our communities.

About the programme

The scheme is aimed at young people aged 12 – 16 and provides them with opportunities to shape, build and strengthen their futures. Students and referrers are able to select from a list of activities and themes that will best meet their needs and interests.

The seven-week course is located at stations across Cheshire with an option of pre- and post-course mentoring offered at individual educational settings.

Aims

The project aims to improve the self-esteem of young people and encourages them to grow in confidence. The programme is led by Youth Engagement staff and firefighters on various stations to share their expertise and who are recognised as strong, positive and caring role models.

It utilises various partner agencies to give our young people the best opportunities to develop and make a positive contribution to their local communities across Cheshire.

Participants are encouraged to:

  • Embrace Challenges.

  • Share their ideas.

  • Maximise their potential.

  • Reflect on their experiences.

  • Develop confidence.

  • Improve communication skills.

  • Improve self-esteem.

  • Work effectively with others.

Background

The scheme has been built on the solid foundations of previous Service programmes such as Kooldown and RESPECT - programmes that either were specifically aimed at young people who were in in danger of or had been totally excluded from school.

The new scheme reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting and nurturing the young people of our communities.

The scheme welcomes any young person aged 12 – 16 who would benefit and thrive from an alternative experience away from the traditional educational setting.
