Volunteer Tommy Bryan runs a garden support team at Runcorn Fire Station. He has been a volunteer for 11 years, starting in November 2008.
Previously Tommy worked for the Ford Motor Company both on the production line and then moved to security and safety checks before retiring.
In the garden he grows an array of fruit and vegetables and used the facility, prior to Coronavirus, to invite local schools along for a visit. Tommy and his team of volunteers give pupils a guided tour of the garden, sharing their passion, knowledge and experience on how to grow fresh produce from seed. The pupils also get vital fire safety advice from firefighters as part of the visit.
Last year 957 local people visited the garden from Runcorn primary schools, including Westfield, Astmoor, Pewithall, Woodside, Gorsewood and St Clements.
Tommy said: “Volunteering keeps my mind active, since losing my wife, it gives me much needed social ability and I have an immense amount of pride when I see the smiles of achievement on the faces of the pupils that attend.”
