Large refuse fire in Warrington

Eight fire engines, including one from Greater Manchester


At 22.46 the Service received multiple calls of a fire in the open off Athlone Road, Warrington.

On arrival crews found a large fire involving refuse and recycling material and began using main jets to tackle the blaze as well as using other jets to cool nearby gas tanks.Four fire engines were sent to the scene initially and this was later increased to eight.

Crews continued to work on containing the blaze until just after 10am on Sunday morning, to stop it from spreading to nearby premises.

The fire is believed to have been started deliberately. Anyone with any information is urged to contact police on 101 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
