Shortly before 10.30am firefighters were called to reports of a vehicle fire on the A556 Chester Road in Tabley.
Firefighters attended the scene and found the trailer of a heavy goods vehicle well alight.
The driver of the HGV had detached a tractor unit from the trailer.
The trailer was carrying approximately 19 pallets of non-hazardous materials which weighed approximately 25,000kg.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to fight the fire.
Fire crews also worked to contain the water and prevent any waste running into nearby waterways.
The Environment Agency were made aware of the incident.
As a result of the fire the A556 was closed westbound between the A5033 Northwich Road and the A559 Manchester Road.
Once the fire was extinguished firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to check for hotspots and make sure that the area was safe.
A specialist clean up company was called to the site to assist with the clean up and recovery work.
Once firefighters had completed all their work at the scene the incident was handed over to the Highways Agency.
Firefighters were in attendance for more than four hours.
The road was reopened after they had left the scene.
