Large peat fire in Burtonwood

Three fire engines attended from Warrington, Stockton Heath and Frodsham


At around 3.50pm on Friday 22 May firefighters from Warrington, Stockton Heath and Frodsham were called to reports of a large fire in the open in Burtonwood.

On arrival crews discovered the fire involved approximately 800 tonnes of peat which was smoldering. 

Firefighters have been working throughout the  night to tackle the fire.

The crews have been working with the site owner, have been using a mechanical digger to move the compost, while two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, have been using two hose reel jets and a main jet to extinguish the fire. 

The crews have also been using a thermal imaging camera to monitor the temperature of the peat.

UPDATE 7PM - Saturday 23 May

Relief crews from Birchwood, Wilmslow and Runcorn are now in attendance at the incident and the crew a making good progress in tackling the fire.

Firefighters are continuing to use a hose reel jet and main jet extinguish the fire. The are also using a thermal imaging camera to monitor for any hotspots.

UPDATE 9PM - Saturday 23 May

Firefighters have now left the scene and the incident has been handed over to the landowner.

Crews were in attendance for more than 28 hours.
