Crewe Fire Cadets looking for new recruits

Crewe Fire Station is looking for young people to become Fire Cadets and is inviting anyone between the ages of 12 and 16 years of age to join.

The Service is keen to recruit young people to take part in this rewarding training scheme, which will not only be fun and enjoyable but will also give them the chance to learn new personal and social skills and potentially obtain a professional qualification.

Vicky Wrest, Cadet Manager for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said, "We have two units based at Crewe fire Station which are really well attended. Being a cadet with the Service is an excellent opportunity for young people and gives them the opportunity to develop personally as well as learning about self discipline and team work.”

As part of a continual training and development programme, the cadets will be provided with a free fire kit and uniform similar to that worn by firefighters and will take part in a drill night one evening a week at their local fire station.

Drill nights take place on either a Wednesday or Thursday evening from 6.30pm until 9pm. During this time cadets train with firefighting equipment, which includes hoses, fire appliances and ladder drills as well as doing other outdoor activities.

Apart from drill nights cadets also take part in additional activities at weekends and during the school holidays which include residential stays, local camps and national camp trips.

Cadets also fundraise for international projects throughout the year, which includes young people from the Cheshire Cadet units having the opportunity to go overseas on exchange visits to help with community projects and to build schools.

Nick Evans, Youth Engagement Manager for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The cadet scheme is a fantastic initiative and enables young people to make a real difference to their local community by supporting the work of the firefighters.”
