Comment from: Claire Bennett - Volunteer Programme Manager

Comment: I’m often asked to sum up volunteering, my answer is always the same... A group of people who use their strengths, improve their weaknesses and always leave a priceless impact on so many lives.

Comment from: Station Manager Andy Gray

Comment: To the Firebike team – your efforts are so appreciated, over the years you have supported an increase in the ability of those who have attended the Bikerdown course to be able to not only look after themselves in there day to day riding but also other road users. On several occasions now the “at scene” and first aid skills your deliver have been put to use by the delegates to support the health and wellbeing of other road users.

Comment from: Station Manager Andy Gray

Comment: To the Post fire team – we often request your support for the public but we rarely get to meet you as we have normally left the scene prior to your arrival. You continue to consistently help those who need you, giving them that support often when they need it most.

Comment from: Sarah Dornford-May - Joint Services Corporate Communications

Comment: Having had the privilege of working with volunteers at events such as The Royal Cheshire Show, Pride events and Safety Central, I've seen first hand the hard work and commitment they give both to the Service and the community. They are a credit to, and are great ambassadors for, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service. Thank you!

Comment from: Keith Roberts

Comment: I would like to thank all the volunteers who back in May helped revive a garden space for a care home in Widnes. These included volunteers from across the Service, cadet leaders and Widnes cadet unit who did the project as part of their Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) award, giving 20 hours each while maintaining a safe socially distanced work place. In addition to this project, DoE navigation training was devised by volunteers and delivered to cadets across the Service, to help prepare them for their hiking section and behind the scenes other members of the staff team provided guidance to cadets in compiling and recording evidence. This shows how important, behind the scenes, volunteering is to the Service so on behalf of all the young people that you have helped I would like to thank you again for your support.

Comment from: Nick Evans Head of Prevention

Comment: Thank you so much to all our volunteers. As Head of Department I am proud to say that volunteers sit within Prevention and believe that volunteering, in all its forms, brings diversity which enriches the organisation. our volunteers bring a range of qualities, skills and expertise to initiatives CFRS deliver. I am in no doubt the volunteering you do improves our service and we would not be able to offer the amount of programmes without your sheer resilience and desire to help others in your spare time.

Comment from: Selina Blain, Safety Central Operations Officer

Comment: 2020 has been a challenging year for all – it’s made it impossible for our Rangers to volunteer and we have missed the laughter, the fun and the friendship you all brought to our days. We would like to extend our thanks to all our friends, for all the hard-work and effort you demonstrated whilst you volunteered with us – we can’t wait to see you again soon, to continue the great work we already have setup and together, make it bigger, better and stronger.

Comment from: Lorna Lucas, Lead Advocate Halton & Warrington Prevention Team

Comment: Debra Carnell is a Volunteer for the Halton and Warrington Prevention team and has been for many years. Debra is an inspiration she is such a force of positivity and light and loves to attend community events and Station open days with us. Debra is very active in the Warrington community she is known to so many people and organisations that we quite often call her and use her knowledge of the area. Unfortunately, Debra has not been able to offer her services during COVID as she has been keeping safe and isolating. I know this has had an effect on Debra and she has struggled at times, however, this has not stopped Debra from regularly checking in with us and making sure that her “fire family” are safe and well. The Team have really missed Debra and we are looking forward to seeing her back in action when times are safer.

Comment from: Jenny Maskell - Prevention Partnership Co-ordinator

Comment: The response the Volunteer Co-ordinator received from CFRS volunteers when the pandemic first emerged is heart-warming – they put their hands up and said they were ready to help the communities of Cheshire in any way they could. It is in difficult times where the willingness to help and the kindness of others means the most and CFRS volunteers have given both. I hope they are immensely proud of the work they do quietly and without fuss. I guess what I am trying to say is thank you, not just on behalf of the Service but as a resident of Cheshire and on behalf of my family and friends for the work that you do not just during the pandemic but the whole year through.

Comment from: Mark Shone, Safety Central Manager

Comment: Without our rangers, Safety Central would be an empty film set. They're the stars who bring it to life every day and make such a difference to children, young people and community groups. This year we've missed them more than words can say and can't wait to see them all properly in 2021 xxx

Comment from: Victoria Griffiths - Safety Central

Comment: We have the most amazing team of volunteers I have ever come across. The dedication that our rangers put into the role and, of course, the professionalism sometimes means that i momentarily "forget" that they are actually volunteering and not paid staff. However this not only makes me love them even more, and I do love every single one of them, but means I have the highest amount of respect for them. I really cannot wait until we are all back together chatting over a cup of tea and exchanging stories, making each other laugh, supporting each other when things are tough and most of all I can't wait to be back with my friends. From the bottom of my heart, thank you <3

Comment from: ACFO Gus O’Rourke

Comment: Anyone who freely gives of themselves and their time for a noble cause deserves to be recognised and thanked. For years I have admired the commitment of our CFRS Volunteers many of who I have known professionally and personally. We seem to attract the most fabulous people who over the years have done some amazing things. Recently, with the pandemic our volunteers have once again been with us through some very demanding times. It is impossible to single out individuals but it is safe to say, we are very grateful to them all and I personally want to say a huge Thank You, I sincerely hope that circumstances allow them to all have a wonderful Christmas. Gus

Comment from: Sean Barlow. Youth Development Manager.

Comment: Having worked across the full range of youth programmes that the services offers, I am very aware of the extent of how much volunteers support our ability to deliver this work. Many of the young people we work with benefit greatly from those informal educational experiences that the service delivers to our communities. One of the most notable benefits for these young people is working with adult role models who engage positively with them to help them feel positive about themselves and raise their self-esteem. Through engaging them in experiences where they can encounter success, we help many young people overcome significant obstacles that the transition to adulthood presents them with. Engaging with young people in our communities in this way helps to break down barriers, encourages community cohesion and enables the service to deliver its prevention activities to an important part of our future. Without the support of volunteers this work would be considerably restricted. Driving Prince’s Trust to residentials, showing primary school children how to grow food on the station allotment, helping to deliver the RESPECT course, delivering free school meals, attending graduation ceremonies, delivering our Fire Cadet Units, the list is quite endless really. The main one though that sticks in my mind is that you give up a little bit your time to make a big, big difference to the lives of our young people. A kind word, a laugh at their shenanigans, or suffering their music whilst you drive the minibus, it is all very much appreciated by myself and the staff that work in the service’s youth programmes. Thank you CFRS Volunteers. Have a lovely Christmas.

Right from the beginning of the pandemic our brilliant volunteers were ready and willing to support the community of Cheshire in its hour of need. Your efforts have made a huge contribution to the support that the Service has offered to the residents of Cheshire during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Comment from: Hazel Crampton

Comment: All our service volunteers are fantastic, but this is a very special thankyou for all of our volunteers at Safety Central. They are the heart of the building and make the centre special, bring our activities to life and are a vital part of the team. We couldn't do what we do every day without them they are our Safety Central family and we would be lost without each and everyone of them. THANKYOU so much for all that you do for us, can't wait till you are back in the centre it's the not the same without you.

Comment from: Linsey Daniels, Apprenticeship Coordinator, Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service

Comment: My message is for Kathy Williams. I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank Kathy for her assistance on IFE exam day on 12th October. I know that it is some time ago now, but we didn't have this fantastic Appreciation Station up and running then. Kathy was asked to assist with procedures put in place to ensure our exam centre was Covid secure. Kathy's can do attitude and flexibility on the day was fantastic, and ensured that everything went well on the day. Hope we get to work together again, as it was a pleasure working with you.

Comment from: Ben North - On call Firefighter

Comment: Hi, As a previous volunteer on the Post Fire Support Team, I have seen first hand the work that a volunteer does to improve the lives of the people of Cheshire. The PFST respond to calls on a 24/7 rota, this is time they give up to be available to help others in their hour of need. This is a messy job and hard work too. They are also pushing the fire prevention message via Fire station open days, community events and give up their weekends in the process. I really enjoyed my time with the team and have made friends for life. I have gone on to be an on call firefighter to continue serving the people of Cheshire.
