Where do I get the uniform and equipment from to be a fire cadet?
On joining a cadet unit, all cadets are issued their own complete set of uniform. This includes a smart blue uniform similar to today's fire fighters and a specially tailored set of 'fire kit' which is used to take part in firefighting style activities.
Whilst cadets will have the opportunity to use some of the normal equipment on the fire engines, each group also has it's own items for specific use by the cadets - including ladders and hoses. These are provided by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.
What does being a fire cadet mean?
As a fire cadet you will be treated as a young firefighter. Provided with your own uniform, you will be expected to attend a weekly drill night at your local fire station to learn about all activities in the fire service. You will also learn many of the skills of a firefighter and work towards a number of awards. You will be expected to show a certain amount of discipline and commitment just like a firefighter.
Does it cost anything?
Most of our cadet units ask for a small weekly amount, of no greater than £2. This varies from unit to unit and helps provide refreshments and subsidise the trips away from the fire station. Before joining the amount involved will be confirmed with you.
What is a drill?
A drill is an activity or exercise using fire service equipment.
I have asthma, is that a problem?
No, asthma shouldn't be a problem. Cadets is open to all young people, however it is important that when you join you complete the medical forms accurately so that we can make sure you are always safe.
