Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service’s 2026 STAR Awards celebrated the dedication, bravery and professionalism of staff, volunteers and cadets who go above and beyond to keep our communities safe. This year’s ceremony recognised outstanding contributions across the Service, including life‑saving actions, exceptional leadership and achievements that have made a real difference to the people of Cheshire.
One of the highest honours of the evening, the Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation, was awarded to Frodsham On‑Call Firefighter Jake Martindale, who saved a colleague’s life after they became seriously unwell while at work. Jake delivered CPR and used a defibrillator, acting with calmness, skill and professionalism in a moment of greatest need.
Several awards also highlighted the powerful impact of frontline and community‑focused work. Firefighter Jennifer Fox was recognised for her vital role in three swift‑water rescues in just four months, demonstrating remarkable courage and composure under pressure.
The Persons at Heightened Risk Team were honoured for transforming our approach to safeguarding, managing thousands of referrals and supporting some of Cheshire’s most vulnerable residents.
Crew Manager Jon Linde was recognised for his outstanding leadership in strengthening water safety across Cheshire by developing education programmes that have reached more than 15,000 pupils and helped young people stay safe around water.
Jason McTigue was praised for transforming the Service’s Cadet Programme, expanding it from three to fifteen units and creating clear pathways into apprenticeships and fire service careers. Cadet units have a profound impact on young people, including our award winner - Cadet of the Year Jacob Ruth, who was recognised for his leadership and commitment, inspiring his fellow cadets through his reliability, enthusiasm and strong sense of responsibility. Another colleague making a difference to young people’s lives was Chris Openshaw, who ensured the continuation of the King’s Trust Team Programme by securing new support and establishing a thriving unit in Warrington, giving young people across Cheshire continued access to life‑changing opportunities.
Our awards also recognise long‑standing commitment to the Service and community. Volunteer of the Year Keith Baldock was celebrated for more than a decade of dedication to road safety and education, supporting countless children and families through his work at Safety Central. On‑Call Firefighter of the Year, Watch Manager James Eyres, with almost 34 years of service at Bollington Fire Station, was praised for his leadership, innovation in developing animal rescue capability, and the lasting contribution he has made to both his station and the wider organisation.
Colleagues including Conner Lafferty, Heléna Lunn, Sandy Graystone and Elly Colclough were also recognised for the positive influence they have across the Service. Conner and Heléna have helped to create a genuinely positive and welcoming work environment, championing inclusivity through our partnership work and community engagement. Sandy’s kindness and thoughtful support have made a meaningful difference to colleagues through important stages of their career journeys. And special recognition was given to Elly, who was named our Employee of the Year, for her exceptional commitment, professionalism and innovation to strengthen how we train, develop and support our operational crews, all of which has made a tangible, lasting difference to the Service.
The evening was made even more special by the presence of family and friends, whose unwavering support enables our staff to do what they do every day. Our sincere thanks go out to them, and to all our very worthy winners – congratulations!
