Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has been officially recognised as an Endometriosis Friendly Employer, becoming only the second fire and rescue service in England to achieve the status. The milestone was proudly revealed during the Service’s annual International Women’s Day celebration on 5 March.
By signing up to the national scheme run by Endometriosis UK, the Service is taking a meaningful step to break the silence surrounding the condition and ensure a workplace where endometriosis is understood, conversations are encouraged, and staff feel supported.
During the event, Julie Burns from Endometriosis UK highlighted the significant impact the condition can have on those who live with it. She commended the Service for its proactive approach in creating an environment where people feel able to speak openly and managers feel equipped to respond with empathy and practical support.
Chief Fire Officer Alex Waller reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to fostering an inclusive culture, emphasising the importance of visible support for women across the fire and rescue sector.
The achievement follows strong internal advocacy, led by Crew Manager Jon Linde, who championed the initiative and encouraged the Service to join the national scheme.
A powerful moment in the event came when Wholetime Firefighter Nikki shared her personal journey to diagnosis and the impact endometriosis has had on her family life. Her openness brought into focus the real, human experience behind the condition.
Nikki said: “It is incredibly empowering to see the Service recognising endometriosis in such a public and practical way. By breaking the silence and openly acknowledging the impact this condition has on so many of us, we are creating a culture where no one has to struggle alone. It’s a huge step forward for the wellbeing of everyone in the fire service.”
By earning this recognition, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service continues to strengthen its commitment to building a workplace where all staff feel valued, understood, and supported. It marks an important step in creating a compassionate and truly inclusive culture across the organisation.
