Cheshire Fire take on 110-floor stair climb for charity

Colleagues from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service will take on a 110-floor stair climb in Widnes to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity.

Firefighters wearing fire kit and fire staff from across the organisation will together climb the equivalent height of the original New York World Trade Centre using a ladder - a total of 2,071 steps across 70 ascents.

The event takes place at Halton DCLB Stadium in Widnes on Saturday 19 September, starting at 10am. It coincides with the 25th anniversary of 9/11 earlier in the week, when 2,977 people died in the attacks on the New York Trade Centre, including 343 firefighters, so there will be a time for reflection as part of the event.

Technical Fire Safety Officer Kath Harkin, who is coordinating the event, said: “The Fire Fighters Charity supports serving and retired UK firefighters, fire and rescue service staff and their families, so it is important that we support it through fundraising events like this. We would like to thank everyone at the stadium for allowing us to use the facility, and to everyone who has donated so far. We hope to raise around £500 from the event so every little helps.”

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service raises more than £50,000 each year for its Charity through initiatives including station car washes, recycled clothing banks, and regular giving. Money raised from this event will support this contribution so the Charity can continue to do great work.
