Firefighter reunited with man he rescued from 50ft well 

Firefighter Jack Gaskell recently met Jonno Stubbs, who spent months trying to track down the firefighter who helped rescue him after he fell 50ft into a well at his home in Staffordshire. 

For Jonno, the meeting was an opportunity to personally thank the crews who came to his aid during one of the most frightening moments of his life. 

But for Jack, who has served in the fire service for 22 years, the reunion was something he had never experienced before. 

Jack, who is part of Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service's Technical Rescue Unit, was among the firefighters called to assist Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service after Jonno fell 50ft into the well in February in what has been described as a ‘freak accident’. 

As part of the rescue operation, Jack was lowered into the confined space where he was able to reassure Jonno, fit him with a rescue harness and help bring him safely back to the surface. 

While firefighters regularly attend incidents and help people through some of the most challenging moments of their lives, they rarely find out what happens to those people afterwards. 

Speaking about the reunion, Jack said: "In 22 years in the fire service, I've never had anyone reach out and find me after an incident. To have Jonno get in touch and show his appreciation really meant a lot. 

"We do this job to help people. We go to an incident, do everything we can to make a difference and then move on to the next call. You don't often get the chance to see somebody again afterwards. 

"Meeting Jonno and seeing how far he's come since the rescue was really special." 

Jonno suffered significant injuries in the fall and faces a long recovery. Determined to thank the firefighter who had saved him from the well, he tracked down Jack to arrange a meeting. 

The pair were recently reunited at Knutsford Fire Station, sharing stories of the incident and reflecting on the rescue that brought them together. 

The reunion has been an emotional reminder of the lasting impact firefighters and emergency services have in their communities, often long after an incident has ended. Having met during a life-changing rescue, Jack and Jonno have turned a traumatic experience into a lifelong friendship and intend to keep in touch.
