If your business stores or uses large amounts of dangerous substances, you may need to tell Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). This is a legal requirement under the Dangerous Substances (Notification and Marking of Sites) Regulations 1990 (NAMOS).
The purpose of NAMOS is to make sure firefighters know about dangerous substances at a site before they arrive at an emergency. This information helps crews assess risks and respond safely and effectively.
You must notify Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service if your site:
Stores or uses 25 tonnes or more of dangerous substances, or
Stores 150 tonnes or more of relevant ammonium nitrate mixtures.
Dangerous substances can include flammable, toxic, corrosive, oxidising or other hazardous materials.
If you are unsure whether your site meets the NAMOS requirements, you should check the guidance published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
We have provided an online form to make it easier to notify Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service under the Dangerous Substances (Notification and Marking of Sites) Regulations 1990 (NAMOS).
The information you provide will be available to operational crews responding to incidents at your site. Please check that your premises meet the NAMOS criteria before submitting a notification and submit a separate form for each site.
You must tell us if anything changes, including:
Contact details.
The types of dangerous substances stored.
Storage locations.
Quantities held on site.
Closure of the site or cessation of dangerous substance storage.
Keeping your information up to date helps ensure firefighters have accurate information when responding to an incident.
