Details
ONGOING | Firefighters are at the scene of a fire involving a farm building in Peach Lane, Alvaston. The affected barn involves a turkey shed measuring approximately 60m by 25m and has been significantly damaged by fire.
The fire has been surrounded and crews are using breathing apparatus, hose reel jets and main jets to fight the fire.
Further updates will be provided when available. Crews are expected to be on scene for some time.
UPDATE AT 18:15
Attendance at the scene has been reduced to seven fire engines. Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are tackling the fire from the outside using hose reel jets and covering jets. The high reach extendable turret has been set up and is using its spike to pierce the roof space to provide high quantities of water for internal firefighting.
Sadly, a number of turkeys have perished within the affected barn.
UPDATE AT 22:00
The number of fire engines has been reduced to three, alongside the high reach extendable turret and a high volume pump. Firefighters continue to damp down and tackle pockets of fire in the collapsed section of the barn.
Crews will remain on scene overnight and an investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.
UPDATE AT 08:30 ON 20 APRIL
Crews are still on scene, supported by relief crews, and have been using the high-reach extending turret and hose reels to dampen down hotspots identified with a thermal imaging camera.
UPDATE AT 12:44
Accessible areas of the barn have been cleared, and thermal imaging cameras are continuing to be used to monitor the temperature throughout the premises.
Crews are standing by for machinery to remove the roof of the collapsed structure.
UPDATE AT 16:00
A grabber was used to remove debris from the collapsed structure. Firefighters then used a hose reel jet and main jet to dampen everything down. Relief crews are in attendance - any updates will be posted in the morning.
UPDATE AT 10:00 ON 21 APRIL
Firefighters remained on site throughout the night, with resources reduced to one fire engine. The contents of the barn were turned over and dampened down using two hose reel jets.
Cladding and smouldering wood were cut from the building and cooled with a hose reel.
Firefighters remain on scene, continuing to check for hotspots with thermal imaging cameras.
UPDATE AT 09:00 ON 22 APRIL
This incident is now closed. All firefighters had left the scene by approximately 16:30.
This is believed to have been caused accidentally by an electrical fault.
