Details
Firefighters attended two grass verge fires on the northbound side of the M6 between junctions 16 and 17. Crews extinguished the first fire before travelling along the motorway with National Highways to check for further incidents. A second fire was located on the entry slip road to Sandbach Services and was quickly dealt with using a hose reel jet. Firefighters then inspected the remainder of the route up to junction 17 and confirmed there were no additional fires. Temporary lane closures were in place while firefighters worked. The fires are believed to have been accidental. While the exact cause of these fires has not been identified, we would like to take this opportunity to urge road users to take their litter home. In hot, dry conditions, discarded cigarettes and litter such as glass bottles can easily ignite dry vegetation, leading to fires that can spread quickly alongside roads and motorways.
