I am conducting research into the impact of disposable BBQs on people, animals, buildings and the environment across the UK. I am carrying out this research on behalf of Keep Britain Tidy, who are currently campaigning to remove ignition risks from the environment.
I request to be supplied with data on the causes of fires reported to Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service, including but not limited to those started by disposable BBQs, cigarette lighter, broken/discarded glass bottles and sky lanterns. I request that this data is broken down at least by month, for the last 24 months.
If available, I also request information on the duration and damage caused by those fires and the cost incurred by your service.
Please find attached the data requested regarding fires attended by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service between 1st September 2020 and 31st August 2022. The following data has been provided:
Time of Incident
Time Incident Closed
Month and Year
Property Category and Type
Cause and Main Cause
Ignition Source
Damage Area in square metres (if recorded)
For your information, primary fire reports contain more data than a secondary fire or chimney fire report. This is the reason that some incidents in the attached dataset will have a main cause and an ignition source and others do not.
Due to the unique circumstances of each incident we cannot provide costs incurred by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.
