1. How many assaults against firefighters were recorded in each of the last five years, 2019/2020/2021/2022/2023.
2. Could I have a geographic breakdown of where the assaults occurred.
3. Could I have a brief description of the nature of the assault.
2019 - 9 Incidents
Location | Description of Assault |
Ellesmere Port | Fifteen youths threw missiles at Firefighters. |
Handforth | Occupier of property became abusive and threatening while crews asked for access on to a hydrant on their property. |
Northwich | Intoxicated individual showed threatening behaviour towards crews while attending an unattended bonfire at address. |
Widnes | Child made emergency call to say there was a fire at the property, when crew arrived one child threw a jug of water out of the window and wet the crew manager. |
Widnes | Crew was attacked by youths with fireworks. |
Widnes | While attending a smoke alarm visit occupant became verbally abusive to crew. |
Warrington | Verbal attack and aggressive behaviour towards crews. |
Latchford | Verbal abuse and causing obstruction to Firefighter by touching and removing equipment from the pump. |
Congleton | Crews went to see a collapsed person in a cubicle, person became aggressive and physically aggressive towards crews. |
2020 - 7 incidents

Northwich | Member of the public spat on driver’s door of service vehicle. |
Halton Lea | Passing under a foot bridge in an appliance and a number of youths threw objects at the appliance. |
Macclesfield | While proceeding to an incident a member of the public stepped out into the road to tell crews to slow down and sirens are too loud. |
Chester | Occupier’s son was verbally aggressive towards fire crew while at an incident. |
Ellesmere Port | On arrival to the incident missiles and Laser pens were directed towards the crew. |
Winsford | Whilst attending a bonfire, pump came under attack from youths - initially verbally however the youths returned and attached crews with projectiles such as stones and rocks. Police attended and chased after offenders. |
Ellesmere Port | Attended a small fire in the open incident and some youths were giving verbal abuse and threatened to set more fires. |
2021 - 10 incidents

Widnes | After gaining forced entry to premises with paramedics, occupier produced a 9” knife and made threats to kill crews. |
Llangollen | Travelling at road speed, a group of teenagers threw an object at the appliance hitting the rim rear cab nearside window. |
Widnes | Fire station windows have been smashed, also evidence of other attempts as stones and bricks found in other areas around the building. |
Winsford | On arrival at the incident, made entry into front yard of property, assessing how to gain access to the property the occupant opened the top window threatened crews with death/to be stabbed if they entered the property and threatened to set the house on fire. |
Ellesmere Port | Attending wheelie bin fire in the open - extinguished fire and as leaving the incident - a group of 5/7 youths aged between 16/18 white youths, medium height and build, all in black clothing - threw stones at the appliance - striking the vehicle - small dent to rear offside locker door - locker still in working order. |
Winsford | Leaving incident, drove around the corner - youths behind fence - threw handful of pebbles at pump. |
Sutton | Malicious calls from intoxicated male who was aggressive with Firefighters and threw rucksack at appliance. |
Wilmslow | Verbal abuse from occupier of property. |
Tarporley | Firefighter assaulted by Member of the public when attending a vehicle on fire (place hand on shoulder of Firefighter). |
Culcheth | Whilst attending a call out to a farm, farmer became aggressive towards Firefighter. Fire was a controlled fire and procedures explained to farmer once he had calmed down. |
2022 - 11 incidents

Sandbach | Whilst on route to the station in response to a call out a Member of the Public verbally abused staff member. |
Ellesmere Port | There was a male stood with the fire who had no issues when informed the fire service will be extinguishing the fire due to the location of the fire and this is the 3rd time the fire service have attended. Another male walked towards crews and became aggressive towards crews, made threats to damage appliance if fire service put the fire out and then went over to crews making threats. Crews immediately withdrawn and awaited arrival of police before extinguishing the fire. |
Winsford | Whilst attending incident Firefighter was assisting another extinguish the fire when subjected to a green laser being shone into eyes causing temporary flash blindness for around 20 seconds. |
Winsford | Whilst attending a garage fire, youth with green lasers shone directly into fire crew’s eyes. |
Winsford | Whilst driving along, appliance was subjected to lasers being shone into the cab and towards the driver. |
Winsford | Rockets fired at Firefighter. Fireworks thrown at appliance. Laser pen pointed at driver whilst parked and working the pump at rear of the pump. |
Winsford | Firework directed towards crews stood at the back of the pump and firework thrown into that general direction of Firefighters. |
Winsford | Whilst attending the incident, it was noticed approximately 6-7 youths in attendance. The youths started throwing bricks, pieces of wood and skateboards at the appliance. The crew was still in the appliance at this time. The appliance withdrew to Rendezvous Point for Emergency (RVP) awaiting police. |
Winsford | Whilst crews attending a false alarm malicious, lasers were shone at the appliance. |
Chester | Two employees were making business safety visits as part of the requirements of their role. The premises visited was in Chester. Following an explanation on the nature of the visit by the employees, the inhabitants of the premises were unwilling to co-operate. The employees requested to speak to the manager of the establishment. Eventually the employees were given the opportunity to speak with the manager via phone. The manager was extremely rude, evasive and obstructed the employees. The employees left to inform an inspector. |
2023 - 7 incidents

Winsford | Employees completing a Site Risk Assessment. On arrival at the premises, Member of the Public approached employees and behaved in an aggressive, irate manner. |
Winsford | Crews attended fire where two youths were in attendance. The youths were guided away from area by crew and left when police arrived. However, when police left the scene, the youths returned. Bottles were thrown and damaged appliance. |
Winsford | Employee was verbally threatened by a member of the public who was breaking into Fire Station. |
Sandbach | Whilst responding to an incident employee’s car was kicked by a member of the public on the station. Employee was then verbally abused by a group of youths. |
Crewe | Employees conducting a Fire Safety Audit were spoken to in a suggestive and inappropriate manner by the responsible person. |
Winsford | While attending an operational incident, employees were approached by 8-10 youths who threatened violence. The youths pulled down a garden wall and used the bricks as projectiles directed towards employees. |
Crewe | During a routine follow up inspection at premises employees were subjected to inappropriate sexually explicit comments by the responsible person. |
