Career progression

As you move through your career as a Firefighter, there will be opportunities to progress to:


Firefighter - carries out day-to-day firefighting, prevention and protection work.

Crew Manager - in charge of the crew of a fire appliance. Carries out day-to-day firefighting and fire safety work. Will attend incidents as officer in charge of an appliance and will also take command of small-scale incidents. Will also undertake specialist duties such as training or fire safety.


Watch Manager - responsible for the co-ordination and safety of everyone and everything on their Watch during incidents.


Station Manager - responsible for a whole station and ensuring the crews are delivering the best possible service to the local community.


Group Manager - responsible for a whole specialist area within the Service. Responsible for the performance management of that area, ensuring that it meets the needs of the community.


Area Manager - taking a lead role in the management of major incidents. Responsible for implementing strategic decisions across the whole Service.


Assistant Chief Fire Officer - the ACFO has strategic responsibility for directorates. Will take command of major incidents.


Deputy Chief Fire Officer - deputises for the Chief Fire Officer during their absence. Has strategic responsibility for directorates. Will take command of major incidents.


Chief Fire Officer - the head of the organisation. Will take command of major incidents.
