White goods include everyday appliances such as tumble dryers, washing machines, dishwashers and fridge freezers.
Fires can occur if appliances are used incorrectly or not properly maintained. Follow these simple steps to help keep you safe:
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use and maintenance.
Register your appliance so manufacturers can contact you about faults or recalls.
Check for recalls or safety notices on the Electrical Safety First website.
Do not overload plug sockets. White goods should be plugged into their own socket.
Do not run tumble dryers, washing machines or dishwashers while you are asleep or away from home.
Keep appliances well-ventilated and ensure vents are not blocked or kinked.
Clean your tumble dryer lint filter after every use. If you notice burning smells or unusually hot clothes, stop using the appliance and have it checked by a professional.
Fit working smoke alarms and test them weekly.
Make sure you have an escape plan and remember: Get out, stay out and call 999.
Common household appliances also carry a fire risk if not used safely. This includes kettles, toasters, microwaves, air fryers, hair straighteners and charging devices.
Keep appliances clean and free from grease, crumbs and dust build-up.
Do not leave small appliances unattended while in use, especially when cooking.
Keep appliances away from flammable materials such as paper, tea towels and curtains.
Do not use damaged appliances, plugs or cables.
Always place appliances on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
Never leave heated hair stylers on soft furnishings or carpet, use a heat-resistant mat.
Avoid overloading sockets when using multiple small appliances.
Allow appliances to cool before storing them away.
