Bedtime routine and escape routes

The best way to stay safe from a fire while you are asleep is to have a safety bedtime routine for everyone in your home.

Before you go to bed

  • Take a few simple steps each night to reduce the risk of fire while you sleep.

  • Switch off and unplug electrical appliances that are not in use.

  • Make sure cooking appliances are fully turned off and cooled – remember to keep your hob clear.

  • Ensure candles are fully extinguished.

  • Make sure embers in fireplaces are properly out and electric heaters are switched off and cooled.

  • Do not run washing machines, tumble dryers or dishwashers while you are asleep.

  • Avoid charging devices while you sleep, especially on soft furnishings.

  • Never charge electric bikes, scooters or similar products while you sleep, and keep them away from hallways and escape routes.

  • Close internal doors to help slow the spread of fire and smoke.

  • Check escape routes are clear of clutter and easy to use.

  • Ensure your smoke alarms are working by testing them regularly.

  • Keep mobile phones and keys for doors and windows where they can be easily found.

Fire escape Plan

  • Make sure everyone in your home knows what to do if the smoke alarm sounds, especially at night.

  • Create a clear escape plan for your home and discuss to make sure everyone understands – especially young children.

  • Identify your main way out and an alternative route in case it is blocked.

  • Agree a safe place to meet outside.

  • Check you can still hear your smoke alarm when you wear devices such as ear plugs.
