Windows and mirrors

Keep reflective and glass objects away from direct sunlight to reduce the risk of fire in your home.

Window and mirror safety

Sunlight can be concentrated by reflective or glass objects, increasing the risk of nearby materials catching fire. Items such as magnifying mirrors, glass ornaments or even bowls of water can focus the sun’s rays and ignite materials like curtains, paper or clothing.

Safety advice

  • Keep magnifying mirrors, such as shaving and vanity mirrors, out of direct sunlight.

  • Avoid placing mirrors, glass ornaments or paperweights on windowsills.

  • Do not leave reflective or glass objects where they can catch direct sunlight.

  • Check your home for items that could concentrate sunlight, especially near windows.

The risk is not limited to inside the home

Reflective decorative ornaments, garden mirrors or glass items left outside, can also concentrate sunlight and start fires. Items like bottles, jars or broken glass can also ignite dry grass or vegetation. Avoid placing reflective objects in your garden or outbuilding windows that will be in direct sunlight, especially during warm, dry weather.
